You’ve decided it’s finally time to lose that excess weight. Awesome decision!
However, if you are overweight you may have a more difficult time starting an exercise program.
Gyms and health clubs can be intimidating to you and some forms of exercise may not be right for your body.
Do not fret! There are plenty of exercises for obese people that will start your diet off in the right direction.
Best workout routines for obese people.
Before you try any of these exercises it is very important to talk to your doctor to be sure you are healthy enough for physical activity.
Make sure you are drinking plenty of water before, during, and after exercise.
Walking
Walking is a perfect choice for larger exercisers because you need little equipment and you can do it anywhere you want to. It is low impact, but can be performed at different intensities.
Grab a comfortable pair of shoes and walk for about 15 minutes per day. Add a few minutes each day until you reach a full 30 minutes. Don’t worry about distance or intensity at first; just make sure time is consistent.
As your body gets used to physical fitness, start to increase intensity and speed of your walking. A great pace is 100 steps per minute, which can be easily measured with a pedometer.
Aqua Jogging
This exercise is aimed at people who have joint pains or difficulty walking.
The only problems with choosing this exercise is you will need a buoyancy belt and a deep pool. This may mean you will be exercising in front of others.
If you have no problem finding a buoyancy belt, then hop in the pool and simply start running in the water. Make sure your feet do not touch the bottom of the pool. Your legs should be the only thing pushing you forward in the water.
As with walking, you are going to want to start out slowly and increase intensity slowly as your body gets used to working out.
Group Exercise Classes
If you’ve read the article Sticking To A Diet, you know that support from family and friends is one of the best ways to be successful with your diet.
Group exercise classes will provide you with support from the people who will be working out with you. Not only that, but there will be an instructor who can provide you with extra guidance and advice.
Talk to the class instructor before you make any decision to start the class. Get feedback from the instructor; find out how the class is run, if you will enjoy it, etc…
Strength Training
Strength training builds muscle, which will boost your metabolism allowing you to burn calories during periods of rest.
Strength training exercises can be easily done at home with your own set of weights. You will be able to hit every major muscle group while doing strength training exercises.
Remember, your body is probably not used to working out, so take it easy the first couple of days while lifting weights. After a week or so, you can increase the intensity of your exercises.
Hiring a personal trainer may be a good idea if you choose this route. They will show you the correct technique for certain weight exercises.
Tai Chi
Tai Chi is a series of flowing movements to increase range of motion in your joints. It involves balancing postures and meditation. It can be a very relaxing, yet beneficial, form of exercising that will also help decrease stress.
You may be able to find Tai Chi classes in your local area. Again, you may want to talk to the instructor initially before getting involved with the class.
Many classes take place in outdoor parks to give you more of a relaxed feeling, but that may also mean exercising in a public place, so make sure you are ready for that.
