Personally I think that everyone should have a hobby; something that they like to do that will fill their free time with enjoyment and happiness.
Sometimes our hobbies turn into our professions. My friend and I started this blog about a year ago just to build a website. After we learned about affiliate marketing
, we started to make money off of what we had done for fun. My friend stopped Develop Your Life and now writes for his blog, Storm the Internet.
I would definitely consider this to be my main hobby since I’m sitting here on a Saturday afternoon writing this for fun.
My brother loves to design websites, and he has made a couple of designs in his free time. He has become quite good at it and was recently offered a web design job. His pure enjoyment may turn into a job that he will like.
I could sit here and list off a bunch of my friends hobbies pretty easily, but there are some people out there that don’t really have a hobby to fill up their free time. Some kids will come home after school, throw their shit on the floor, and watch TV for 3 hours. Maybe they will get up and aimlessly walk around their house. They complain about having nothing to do, or being bored all the time. Well, hobbies are a great way to patch up that boring time with fun.
When picking a hobby, make sure you are doing something you actually like to do. Don’t collect Pokemon cards if it’s something you aren’t into. If you love coins, start a coin collection. There is really an endless amount of things you could do for fun, but if you are always saying “I need a hobby” then here is a list of hobbies to inspire you:
Collecting certain objects is probably the most common hobby. If collecting things sounds interesting to you, start a collection! A few things to collect are coins, stamps, cards, CDs, memorabilia, bottle caps, rocks, or miniature cars. I actually have a small song collection going. I burned a bunch of my dad’s CDs onto my iTunes, and I have almost 5,000 songs. Pretty small, but I’m working on it.
I love people that have model collections. Rockets, aircrafts, or trains are some models people build. Some do some a really good job on their railroad models, making it almost seem like it would be something you see if you were flying over in an airplane. We have a train museum around here that has a 100 yard train model setup. It’s amazing.
Arts and Crafts
Painting, scrap-booking, origami, whittling, weaving, crocheting, or woodworking are all craft hobbies you could do. My grandmother used to make decorative baskets for fun, and my mom has a few around our house. My dad turns plain, boring wood into art that we also have around our house.
Some hobbies include traveling the world. Of course, you would need some money to start this out, but I think that would be one of the most fun things to do. It’s one of my goals in life.
Some people may have hobbies that seem weird to you, and you should never make fun of someone for what they think is fun. A couple of days ago in my English class, we talked about the differences between sex and gender. Yup, there are differences. We spent a whole 50 minutes talking about it, but the next class we watched a video on drag queens. Our professor asked us what we thought about what we just saw. Most of the students said it was weird and made them feel uncomfortable. They were making fun of it in a way, and I thought if it was something they loved to do, then there is no reason for us to make fun of their enjoyment. Maybe they think it’s weird that you kick around a ball all day long. Respect someone for their hobby; don’t put them down for it.
So, you should no longer be saying “I’m bored, I need a hobby,” and instead doing that hobby. Have fun and enjoy!
