What is confidence? The way I like to put it, is the difference between feeling like the sky is the limit and feeling the world is out to get you. Becoming more confident in yourself is a skill that is very important for a variety of different reasons. Think of confidence as a master key that can open tons of doors for you. These doors can include attaining a job, getting that raise, or even something as small as asking that beautiful girl in your class to the movies. I took a Psychology course at the University at Buffalo and I remember one lecture we talked about confidence the entire time. The most important thing that I got out of that hour lecture was that others see us as we see us. To simplify that confusing sentence, if you see yourself as an attractive, funny, or energetic person, others will see you that way. That is the key to be more confident.
If you are having trouble becoming more confident you have nothing to worry about. There are plenty of fish out in the sea that have problems with confidence, but guess what? There are plenty of things you can do to increase confidence. If you follow these tips on how to become more confident then you should be ready to use that master key, and open countless doors.
Dress for SuccessI remember back in high school we had a day where all the kids would dress up and look their best. It was called Dress for Success Monday’s. People thought they were more attractive on those days because they all looked their best, and because they thought they looked good so did others that saw them. If you don’t like how you are dressed and you feel completely unattractive you will rub off on others and they will feel that you are unattractive. A quote I like to say is “look good, feel good” and it’s completely true! If you are wearing an expensive, good-looking shirt that you think you look good in you will become more confident.
This doesn’t mean you have to blow your whole paycheck on expensive clothes all the time to increase confidence. Go out and buy some nice, high quality clothes once a month or so. High quality clothes leave you looking better and will last longer. That means your closet will just keep getting fuller of really nice clothes.
Nice clothes are just half of becoming more confident though. You need to groom yourself well. Clean yourself up. I always feel better on days when I wake up early and shower and take time on myself than days where I sleep late and have to fly out the door. Trust me you will feel more confident by being properly groomed.
Work on WalkingFeeling important is a way to increase confidence and a way to feel important is to walk slightly faster from place to place. Whenever I see my business teachers walking through the halls they are walking more energetically than others. If you want to feel more confident, add a little energy to your step. People will think you are important because you seem like you have something to get to and are a busy person.
Another thing that helps you feel more confident is your posture. If you slouch, you look shabby. People with good posture look important. Have you ever seen an important person slouching before? No, but if you have, please send me a picture because I’d love to see. People who walk straight up, or are always sitting up straight, look better and if you remember what we talked about before, if you look good, you feel good!
Positive, Positive, Positive! One thing you really want to avoid when trying to increase confidence is being negative. One of my friends is a very negative person and has absolutely no confidence in anything she does. Her Twitter always seems to be flooded with constant negativity and it honestly brings me down sometimes. I always tell her if she wants to be more confident she has to be more positive. Right now I want everyone reading this to recycle all your negative thoughts into positive thoughts. Stop thinking of what you don’t have and start thinking about what you do have; your appearance, personality, skills. Instantly you will become more confident in yourself.
Sometimes when we have negative feelings we take it out on others and insult them or gossip about them. This is a complete waste of time; you might as well stand in one place and chew gum. Instead of talking crap about someone, compliment them. Remember, go positive! Everytime you compliment someone you feel good, which again makes you become more confident. When you look for the best in others you will eventually see the best in yourself.
Accept compliments too. Don’t just shrug them off and say negative things about yourself. Usually when someone compliments someone they mean it, so say thank you to them and smile. That makes both you and them feel better.
Keep smiling. Smiling usually means happiness. Even if you aren’t happy, smile. It will help you become more confident.
Get Loud and Crazy
That sounds a little intense, so let’s change it to speaking up. Being able to speak in a public setting is one of the biggest ways to increase confidence. Don’t sit back in the corner because you think you will say something stupid. You need to learn to speak up in discussions. I have complete confidence that think article will help you increase confidence. Remember becoming more confident is something you have to work on and you won’t be more confident tomorrow when you wake up. Put some time in it and eventually you will see results.
